The choice to have an artist paint your portrait opens the door to more possibilities than a visit to a photographic studio. The subjects in my paintings are transformed by my personal style of drawing and my preferences of colors and materials. Although I use photographs as a starting point, the end result will do more than capture a likeness – it will radiate with energy and imagination. Cowrie Shells - Glass - 16”x22”
Glass:
When I interpret a photograph in glass I use pure, translucent strokes of color contrasted with areas of opaque black. The image will glow softly or blaze with energy, depending on the time of day and the light sources in the room, thus creating a dynamic relationship between the artwork and its environment. There are no frames around the pieces, so the image floats above the custom made base, like a cross between a stained-glass window and an animation cell. This is an entirely unique and dramatic approach to portraiture.

Kate - Paper - 12”x18”
Paper:
When I interpret a photograph on paper, I enjoy using a variety of wet and dry media to carefully build an image with out hiding the feel and texture of the paper itself. My goal is to achieve the depth and subtlety of a painting while maintaining the spontaneity of the initial sketch. I love the delicacy and responsiveness of paper. It requires of me both peace of mind and assurance of purpose, a balancing act that results in portraits of quiet intensity.
